The IR35 or Intermediaries Legislation was introduced in 1999 and aimed to distinguish between an employee and a contractor. This meant people could not be paid through a Limited Company if they were a ‘disguised employee’.

This legislation also came from a European Union directive and was to make sure that all contractors are entitled to a minimum amount of holiday, paid rest breaks and the right to rest. It also restricts the amount of night work that a contractor can do.
